Recent studies suggest that more than 200 million medication errors occur in the NHS every year. Whilst three in four of the errors are unlikely to result in harm to patients, some medication errors can cause irreversible damage, or even death. Approximately 700 deaths per year are classed as ‘avoidable adverse drug reactions'.

Medication errors can occur because of negligent prescribing of medication by a GP, or because of dispensing errors by a pharmacist. Incorrect dosage of medication can trigger adverse reactions in a patient. Minor symptoms might include temporary dizziness or sickness, but in some circumstances, there can be long term damage to vital organs, particularly the kidneys, which can have serious implications.

Our specialist team of medical negligence solicitors can help you understand why you may have suffered a preventable injury caused by a prescription error. We will explore what restorative treatment might be available, as well as secure compensation for you.

Examples of medication error claims

Prescription errors:

  • Incorrect dosage
  • Incorrect medication either because of misdiagnosis or unsuitability for a patient
  • Incompatible medication prescribed to a patient with existing medication needs
  • Adult dosage prescribed to a child
  • Patient allergy
  • Unchecked repeat prescriptions

Dispensing errors:

  • Medication given to the wrong patient
  • Labelling errors
  • Incorrect dosage dispensed

Accident and Emergency

Our Accident and Emergency departments provide an invaluable and often lifesaving service. With an estimated 21 million admissions to A&E departments every year, occasionally things do go wrong. A&E staff are often under pressure to make prompt diagnosis in circumstances which can be very challenging. When there are failures of care, the impact can be devastating for patients and their families.

Medical errors in accident and emergency medicine can arise in many ways. We have experience of handling a wide range of cases relating to A&E negligence, including those involving patients treated by paramedics, as well as A&E hospital doctors and nurses.

We will fully investigate the circumstances of your case and aim to make the process as easy as possible, guiding you through every stage. We know that often you want to understand why the A&E system failed you, to ensure the same thing doesn’t happen to someone else.

If you have suffered an injury or illness because of poor management, misdiagnosis or failure to diagnose you may be able to recover compensation.
