Sara Westwood recently concluded a case for a client whose condition had been very well managed by lithium over very many years but over a period of a number of months there had been a gradual increase in the concentration of lithium in her blood but action hadn’t been taken by her GPs to address it, either by reducing the dose or referring her to a specialist for further management. Unfortunately, the concentration of lithium continued to increase, without any intervention by those monitoring her, to the point she became toxic and required admission to hospital for prolonged treatment. Whist an inpatient she suffered complications including foot drop, pneumonia and a blood clot in the lung. Her case was settled without the need to go to trial.
